Furniture Restoration and Conservation Services
During the restoration of a piece of furniture our aim is to return it to its original condition whilst preserving its integrity and patination wherever possible. Through sympathetic use and careful selection of appropriate materials we endeavor to realise the makers original design and intention.
Where necessary we are able to conserve the stability and functionality required.
We place great emphasis on the principle of reversibility in our repair work. This awareness and practice will allow any future restoration to be carried out without harm or damage to the fabric of the object.
Antique Cabinet Work
All repairs including turning, carving, also re-building missing or damaged parts of furniture. We endeavor to use old timber where necessary.
Veneering, Marquetry & Inlay
Hand veneering in the traditional method using hot glue to lay new or old surface veneer where appropriate.
Leather & Baize Lining
Gold tooled leather can be supplied & laid for writing surfaces such as desk tops & bureau falls. Baize is available for lining card tables & box interiors.
Upholstery in Cambridge - Chair Caning & Rushing
Sub-contracted to skilled specialists with all associated woodwork dealt with by Andrew A Matthews Restoration.
Wood Finishing
Traditional French polishing, oil, finishing, wax polishing & the cleaning & conservation of old surfaces.
Antique Metalwork in Cambridge
Handles, castors, locks, brass-casting, keys & associated brassware can be repaired, replaced or matched. All work is coloured & patinated to blend in with existing finish.
Commissions
Accurate copies of furniture made & finished to achieve a period appearance.
